CRISTIANO RONALDO's own renewal "will be announced in September meaning that two of the clubs biggest stars" will be staying at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu (MARCA, 8/23). ... The threat of Liverpool's MAMADOU SAKHO "serving a full drugs ban was lifted once and for all on Tuesday night" after the World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed it had chosen "not to appeal" against UEFA's decision to "absolve him of taking a banned substance." WADA left itself open to being sued by Sakho and Liverpool over the "extraordinary chain of events which led to the France defender missing last season’s Europa League final and European Championship" (London TELEGRAPH, 8/23).

LILESA GETS ASYLUM DONATIONS: A crowd-funding campaign has raised more than $40,000 to help Ethiopian Olympic marathon Silver Medalist FEYISA LILESA seek asylum. He "crossed his hands above his head as he finished the race -- a gesture made by Ethiopia's Oromo people who have suffered brutal police crackdowns." He said that "he may be killed if he goes home but Ethiopia's government says he will be welcomed as a hero." Within hours of his protest, "a crowd-funding page was set up." The California-based organizer had initially set a target of $10,000 but it was exceeded within an hour (BBC, 8/22).
