Football Generated More Tweets Per Minute Than Any Other Sport At Rio Olympics

Football emerged with the Gold Medal in the Twitter Olympics, with Neymar's "decisive spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out against Germany generating more Tweets per minute than any other piece of Rio 2016 sporting action," according to David Owen of INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL. The home side’s talisman also took the Bronze Medal in this particular contest "via the free kick that put his team 1-0 up in the same match." According to Twitter Data, "only sprinter Usain Bolt could compete with the Brazilian captain," the Jamaican’s third straight Gold in the 100m taking second place in the social media platform’s classification (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 8/23). CAMPAIGN LIVE's John Scurfield wrote as part of its Rio 2016 activity, MediaCom "tracked UK fan engagement on Twitter." While viewers had mixed reactions to the BBC’s Olympics coverage, "they flocked to the social platform with one in five saying they'd been using Twitter more than usual since the Olympics started and one in three having interacted with tweets about the Olympics." Also, 38% said that "they saw Olympics content on Twitter that they had not seen elsewhere." The London 2012 legacy "continues to burn with fans staying up until the early hours to support the athletes." The night that Adam Peaty won Gold, tweet volume peaked at 3am, while the Opening Ceremony peaked at 12:11am and with a further peak at 1:44am when Team GB arrived (CAMPAIGN LIVE, 8/23).
