Telecom MTC Withdraws Sponsorship Of Namibia Premier League

Telecom MTC announced on Monday that it had withdrawn its sponsorship offer to the Namibia Premier League for the next three years, putting the future of Namibia's top flight football "in jeopardy," according to Helge Schutz of ALL AFRICA. MTC had previously said that it would commit N$15M ($1M) per year "for three years on condition that the NPL found a sponsor" for the extra N$9M ($644,600) per year that it needed to fund the league's activities. By Monday's deadline, however, the NPL "could not give written proof" that it had secured a three-year sponsorship of N$9M, with the result that MTC ended its 14-year sponsorship of the league. MTC spokesperson Tim Ekandjo said, "We can confirm that the NPL, despite its efforts, have not been able to secure an additional sponsor for N$9 million, and therefore MTC has now officially withdrawn its conditional commitment of N$15 million per annum and N$45 million over three years." Ekandjo said MTC would "remain an enthusiastic partner not just of football, but of sports in Namibia." He said, "Our intention is to reinvest all funds meant for the NPL in other sports codes, but we are not going to elaborate about that now. No sport code that we sponsor must have expectations that we will become a lifetime sponsor. We sign three-year agreements, and decide to renew them on merit." Ekandjo said the failure of the NPL to secure a sponsorship should not be seen as a reflection on the competency of NPL Chair Johny Johnson Doëseb, but rather as a "much bigger problem of funding of sports in Namibia" (ALL AFRICA, 8/23).
