Olympique De Marseille Reportedly Sold To Gérard Lopez, But Club Owner Denies Sale

Marcelo Bielsa "is expected to be announced as the new manager" of Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille after the club was reportedly sold to Lotus F1 Owner Gérard Lopez, reports in France said, according to the London GUARDIAN. France Football announced on Monday that a takeover deal had already been formalized "and that an official announcement would be made this weekend," paving the way for Bielsa to make his return to the Stade Vélodrome. Bielsa previously managed the club from '14-15 "but walked out at the beginning of last season after one match, citing conflict with the owner, Margarita Louis-Dreyfus." Lopez is a director of a first division club in his native Luxembourg, CS Fola Esch (GUARDIAN, 8/22). MUNDO DEPORTIVO reported Louis-Dreyfus denied that the sale "had been completed." The club said in a statement that Louis-Dreyfus "formally denies" the information that France Football had divulged. Louis-Dreyfus questioned "the interest that a serious media outlet would have for divulging erroneous and unverified reports." She added that when the club is sold, team employees and the Marseille City Council "will be the first to know" (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 8/23).
