ANZ Stadium Prepares To Host U.S. College Football Game

It has "been a long time between Budweisers since gridiron posts went up at ANZ Stadium," according to Dean Ritchie of the Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH. On Wednesday, 24 days out from the opening match of the U.S. college football season, which has been dubbed the Sydney Cup, "a set of fluro yellow goalposts are in place at ANZ Stadium as organisers run through the huge logistics of hosting a game that will be watched by 30 million Americans." The match between University of California Golden Bears and University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Aug. 27 "will be the first American football game at ANZ Stadium since 1999, when Denver Broncos played San Diego Chargers." Overseeing the erection of the posts on Monday was Colin Scotts, "the first Australian to receive an American football scholarship" in the U.S. Scotts said, "You’re going to hear noises that you’ve never heard before, you’re going see violent collisions and clashes you’ve never seen before, you’re going to see athletes larger than you’ve ever seen in your life. You’re going to see the pinnacle of athleticism on a football field." A crowd of more than 65,000 "is expected for the first-ever U.S. College Football game in the southern hemisphere." The game "will feature marching bands, cheerleaders, team mascots and American footy fare." It "will kick off at noon to work in with an ESPN telecast designed to showcase Sydney" in the U.S. (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 8/2).
