Olympic Notes: Russia To Stage Own Sports Day After Athletes Were Excluded From Rio

Russia's defiance of int'l outrage "was expressed again with the news that the country will stage its own mini-Olympics on Thursday." The "Stars 2016" tournament "will take place in Moscow at the Znamensky Brothers stadium." The "festival of the drugs cheats will include 135 track-and-field athletes -- including Olympic champions and medal winners as well as other members of the 68-strong athletics squad who have been excluded from Rio for state-sponsored doping" (London DAILY MAIL, 7/27).

SURPRISE VISIT
: Brazil's labor ministry, following a surprise inspection, on Wednesday "cited organizers of the upcoming Rio Olympics over labor conditions for about 600 temporary workers brought in to make repairs on housing for athletes." The inspection "led inspectors to demand paperwork about contracts and conditions for the workers, some of whom complained of working nearly 24-hour shifts." The ministry said that inspectors "found workers without proper documentation for labor and social security registries." If suspected violations "are borne out, some inspectors told local media, the ministry could fine organizers" as much as R$315,000 ($96,000) (REUTERS, 7/27).

NEW SHADES: Oakley was named British Rowing’s eyewear provider ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio. The new deal, which runs until the end of the '17 season, sees Oakley become the official eyewear supplier of British Rowing (British Rowing).
