BT Sport Scores 21% Increase In Broadband, TV Revenue

According to BT’s latest financials, its investment in sports rights "is just about paying off," according to Julian Clover of BROADBAND TV NEWS. The company's consumer division reported a 21% increase "in broadband and TV revenue." This however has to be "offset against an increase in operating costs of 14% in part due to costs of the first full year of the BT Sport Europe channels." BT Sport’s average audience figures increased 58% "over the year excluding the Showcase and digital channels." Additional viewers have been "brought in after the Freeview BT Sport Showcase Channel was streamed on YouTube." The figures for Real Madrid’s victory over Atlético Madrid in Milan reached 1.8 million viewers via the BT Sport app, BT.com and the new BT Sport YouTube channel (BROADBAND TV NEWS, 7/28). The INT'L BUSINESS TIMES' Dan Cancian reported shares in BT Group jumped over 3% on Thursday, after the telecom's first quarter results "beat expectations as the acquisition of EE earlier this year boosted revenues." In the three months to the end of June, the FTSE 100-listed company "saw earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBIDTA) jump 25% year-on-year" to £1.8B ($2.4B). Meanwhile revenue, "excluding currency volatility and the impact of acquisitions and disposals, surged" 35% to £5.8B ($7.6B). In January, BT acquired EE, Britain's biggest mobile company, for £12.5B ($16.4B) (IB TIMES, 7/28).
