Matildas goalie turned Australian Football League side Carlton marquee recruit Brianna Davey "has made her leap of faith" believing incentives -- including pay -- for female AFL players "will boom and lure athletes from myriad Olympic sports as a consequence," according to Samantha Lane of THE AGE. Unveiled as one of the 16 top players the AFL proposes to pay A$25,000 ($18,700) for an eight-week season starting in February, Davey, 21, "has abandoned a professional soccer career, leaving W-League side Melbourne City." Davey said that "she is unaware of other female round ball footballers eager to jump to AFL immediately but predicted -- with confidence -- that will change." She said, "Once the [AFL] league becomes more established it will become more appealing. There are definitely people on the cusp who are weighing up and seeing how it goes." Davey said that "she was aware of maybe half a dozen female soccer players who are closely watching the AFL women's league and assessing their sporting futures with an eye to change codes" (THE AGE, 7/27).
