Sam Allardyce Named England Manager By Football Association

Sam Allardyce "has been appointed England manager," according to the BBC. He "signed an initial two-year deal after compensation was agreed with Sunderland, whom he steered to Premier League safety last season." He succeeds Roy Hodgson, who quit after England was "knocked out of Euro 2016 in the last 16 by Iceland." Allardyce, whose first game in charge will be a friendly at Wembley on Sept. 1, said, "It is no secret that this is the role I have always wanted. For me, it is absolutely the best job in English football." Allardyce "has been endorsed by his fellow managers," including ManU Manager José Mourinho, former England Manager Sven Goran-Eriksson and ex-Spurs Manager Harry Redknapp. Mourinho said Allardyce was "more than ready" to lead the national side, while Redknapp said he would bring "a Premier League style and pace" to the national side (BBC, 7/22). In London, Paul McClean wrote Allardyce’s teams have often been criticized "for their style of play, viewed by some as cagey and overly defensive." His philosophy -- if you do not concede, you cannot lose -- "has at times frustrated opposing managers;" in '14 Mourinho, then at Chelsea and now at ManU, labeled it "19th century football," joking that he should have brought "a Black & Decker to destroy the wall" built by Allardyce’s West Ham defense. Allardyce "becomes the 15th permanent England boss" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 7/22).
