Perth To Host National Rugby League's State Of Origin In '19 At New 60,000-Seat Stadium

State of Origin "is heading west," according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. The National Rugby League and West Australian government will on Friday confirm that the second game of the '19 series "will be played at the new Perth stadium." For the first time since a game was played in L.A. nearly 30 years ago, Origin "will feature somewhere other than the eastern seaboard." It is expected to be "the first of many games played outside the code’s traditional backyards as the NRL uses Origin to showcase the sport in growing markets." Officials at New Zealand’s Eden Park "have expressed an interest in hosting the event." NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said that taking a game to Perth "was the perfect opportunity to expand the code’s reach." It is also likely to "fuel momentum in Western Australia for the state to have its own team." The new Perth Stadium, which is scheduled for completion in '18 and will hold 60,000 people, "will be among the best venues in the southern hemisphere." The timing "is ideal for the game, with ANZ Stadium to undergo major redevelopment at the end of the 2018 season." A total of 9.904 million Australians tuned into some part of the series (THE AUSTRALIAN, 7/15).
