Media Note: Sky Deutschland To Launch First Free-To-Air TV Channel In December

German pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland will launch its first free-to-air TV channel later this year. The network's 24-hour sports news channel, Sky Sport News HD, will be available on free-TV in Germany and Austria starting Dec. 1. Viewers will be available to access the channel through satellite, cable, IPTV, online and mobile, whether they have a Sky subscription or not (Sky Deutschland).

FOX TAKES CAF RIGHTS: Pay-TV service Fox Sports Italy has acquired the rights to the next two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations. The Confederation of African Football-operated competition takes place on a biennial basis. Fox Sports will show all 32 matches, including group stages, knockout rounds and the final, from the '17 edition in Gabon and the '19 tournament in Cameroon. The deal was negotiated with Lagardère Sports (Lagardère Sports).

GOING SOCIAL: United Soccer League club Futbol Club Cincinnati's friendly against Crystal Palace "is set to be streamed live" on Facebook. The USL "will provide the Facebook live video stream and, leading up to the game, offer 360-degree video and photographs." These offerings "will be available at the USL Facebook page." Saturday's match is scheduled for a 7pm kickoff at the University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium (CINCINNATI.com, 7/12).

TAKING ISSUE: Gibraltar club Lincoln Red Imps confirmed it is "reviewing the very damaging and defamatory reporting made on a TV channel" after Sky Sports News cited "fake statistics about the Gibraltar outfit" following its historic win over Celtic. Presenter Mike Wedderburn said to former Celtic striker Andy Walker, "Andy, let’s put this into perspective. Celtic’s opponents play to an average crowd of 28 and can’t train on Tuesdays because the pitch is taken up by the local metal detecting society." Wedderburn’s questions "appear to have been taken from a graphic created by the Twitter account @WeahsCousin, which regularly posts made-up quotes and spoof graphics on social media for comic effect" (SCOTSMAN, 7/13).

MEDIA BRIEFS ...
Spanish commercial broadcasting group Atresmedia "has picked up the rights" to the Int'l Champions Cup preseason football tournament. This year's edition of the ICC "will take place across four continents," with matches taking place in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Sweden, Australia and China. Atresmedia, which runs the free-to-air Antena 3 channel, "will air matches involving Spain's top three teams" -- Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona (SOCCEREX, 7/13).

Motorsport.com announced the acquisition of digital assets to the largest online Ferrari community in the world, FerrariChat.com. FerrariChat.com will expand into Motorsport.com's multinational and multimedia presence, including 21 editions and 14 native languages. A privately held company, FerrariChat.com was established in '00 by its founder and CEO Rob Lay. Lay will retain the same position within the new company while leading all day-to-day operations (Motorsport.com).
