Wimbledon Champion Serena Williams Loses Out On $380,000 Because Of Brexit

Bloomberg revealed that Serena Williams will "go home with less Wimbledon prize money this year as a result of Brexit," according to Mark Molloy of the London TELEGRAPH. The world No. 1 has lost out on an estimated $380,000 "due to the value of the pound falling" following the U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union. According to Bloomberg, the female winner’s prize is worth $2.59M when converted to U.S. dollars, down from $2.97M pre-Brexit. It means the 34-year-old "will walk away with less than she did for winning last year’s tournament" -- despite a 6.4% increase in prize pay-out this year. Williams "also lost out" on an estimated further $67,000 prize money after winning the women’s double crown with her sister Venus (TELEGRAPH, 7/10).
