Event Notes: Ironman 70.3 Triathlon To Take Place In Chungju, China

An Ironman triathlon "is set to take place" in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, China on Aug. 14. The Ironman 70.3 Chungju includes a 1.9m swimming course, 90.1m cycling course and 21.1m running course, "all which must be finished within 8 hours and 30 minutes." The total prize money amounts to $15,000 (KOREA HERALD, 7/4).

The return of Indycars to the Gold Coast is "not going to happen." Despite the emergence of a consortium keen to see the open wheeler speed machines back on the GC for the first time since '08, there "are huge hurdles to overcome." The "biggest problem is cash." Indycar organizers would seek up to A$12M ($8.9M) just to stage a race and that "is before even thinking about transport costs." Insiders believe Tourism and Events Queensland would have to stump up an extra A$20M ($14.9M) in total for an event "which could, at best, hope to draw an extra 100,000 people to the annual Surfers Paradise rev-fest" (Brisbane COURIER-MAIL, 7/4).
