Media Notes: Canal+ To Reduce Free Programming To Offer More Sports, Films

French pay-TV provider Canal+ confirmed plans to "reduce the amount of free-to-air programming it shows and strengthen its offering of sports and films in order to attract more subscribers." Starting in September, its main pay-channel "will drop from around five hours of unencrypted programming each day to two hours." The company "promises another 150 hours per month" of encrypted programs, focusing on top content. The group's free-to-air channel D8 will be re-branded Canal8 "to align better with Canal Plus branding" (TELECOM PAPER, 6/27).

Ryan Giggs will join ITV's punditry team "for the remainder of this summer's European Championships in France." The ManU assistant manager "will travel to France in the coming days and will sit on the panel for live coverage" of Poland's quarterfinal clash against Portugal. It is expected that Giggs "will be used at every remaining opportunity by ITV, given his high-profile status and the delay in him joining their team" (London INDEPENDENT, 6/28).
