Argentine Judge Calls For FIFA-AFA Meeting; President Urges Messi To Reconsider

Argentine judge María Servini de Cubría formally requested that a representative from FIFA's regulating committee be available to the Argentine FA and called for a meeting on Thursday "of all parties involved in the political-institutional conflict," according to LOS ANDES. Argentine football execs also agreed to hold a vote on a proposed Superliga. De Cubría sent a letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, "which represented the first advance in negotiations." A meeting will be held in de Cubría's office, "and will feature FIFA execs, members of the national government and directors from the AFA's exec committee." The judge wants to add former judge Alberto Piotti to FIFA's regulating committee (LOS ANDES, 6/28).

'GIFT FROM GOD': ESPN reported Argentina President Mauricio Macri said that he spoke with Lionel Messi over the phone on Monday night to try to convince the player to "reconsider his decision to quit the national team." Macri told reporters on Tuesday that he told the striker "not to pay any attention to the comments being made because, in truth, we are very happy" with the job he has done. Macri: "He thanked me. I don't understand, the truth is that he brings us luck, he brings joy to our lives and it is a gift from God to have the best player in the world for a country that is as football-mad as we are." Macri was president at Boca Juniors before "moving into the world of politics." He said that he was "hopeful that he would be able to meet with Messi next week." On Tuesday, Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta unveiled a statue in Messi's honor and "encouraged Argentina to flood social media with messages encouraging his return." The city also posted transit signs that said, "Don't go Lio" on the city's main streets and at subway entrances. Macri ended a tweet on Monday with the hashtag #NoTeVayasLio (#Don'tLeaveLio), which became a global trending topic (ESPN, 6/28). The BBC reported Messi "has been urged to reconsider" his int'l retirement by Diego Maradona. He said, "Those saying he should quit don't want us to see what a disaster Argentinean football has become. Messi must go on." Maradona added, "Messi has to stay because he will reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia in conditions to become world champion" (BBC, 6/28).
