Collingwood Doubles Back On Pokies-Free Pledge; Applies For More Pokies

Australian Football League side Collingwood has "applied for extra poker machines just days after telling the Melbourne City Council it wants out of the lucrative but contentious business," according to Baker & Warner of the HERALD SUN. The club has "lodged an application to increase the number of pokies at its lucrative Ringwood gaming venue from 80 to 90." Pokies crusader Tim Costello "slammed the Magpies for double dealing." Costello said, "It is totally hypocritical for Collingwood to be publicly claiming it wants to dump the pokies while it is secretly trying to buy more." On Tuesday night, the Melbourne City Council "unanimously approved" in principle a A$3M ($2.2M), 10-year deal with Collingwood to gain limited community access to the club’s new Holden Centre facilities. The deal "requires the club to seek to reduce their reliance on poker machines." But a public notice placed on the same day as the meeting revealed the club is "planning to add 10 machines" to its arsenal at the Coach and Horses Hotel in Ringwood (HERALD SUN, 6/28).
