Collingwood Hopes To Be Pokies-Free In 10 Years In Melbourne City Council Agreement

Australian Football League side Collingwood "aims to be pokies-free within a decade," according to Baker & Warner of the HERALD SUN. The ambition "is set out in a Melbourne City Council management report" which recommends the council enter into a A$3M ($2.1M), 10-year deal with the Pies "for access to community facilities at the club’s Melbourne Park base." A recent resolution passed by the council "requires all AFL clubs doing deals with the city to endeavour to lessen their reliance on harmful pokies revenue." The management report states "the club will continue to investigate ways to reduce its reliance on hotel revenue and has a medium to long term (5-10 years) aim to replace gaming revenue with new revenue streams." Collingwood indicated "it could not guarantee it would be out of the gaming business within 10 years, but was committed to looking at ways of replacing old revenue streams with new ones." The club runs two pokies venues -- "The Club in Caroline Springs and the Coach and Horses in Ringwood." Data presented to councilors revealed that "gamblers lost a total" of A$10.7M at those clubs in '15 (HERALD SUN, 6/27).
