Names In The News

British world heavyweight champion TYSON FURY has denied doping, after the London Daily Mirror said that "he was being investigated by UK Anti-Doping." The newspaper said "traces of a banned anabolic steroid were allegedly found in a sample given by Fury last year." The boxer's promoter, Hennessy Sports, says it is "baffled" by the story (BBC, 6/26). ... French cyclist NACER BOUHANNI reportedly "started the French National Championships road race with four stitches in his right hand and minimal sleep after an altercation with drunk hotel guests the night before." The sprinter reportedly was "awoken at 4am by three intoxicated guests." Bouhanni "asked the guests to keep the noise down but an altercation broke out in the corridor" (CYCLING WEEKLY, 6/26). ... ANDY MURRAY, world No. 1 NOVAK DJOKOVIC and Murray's brother JAMIE were announced as three of the "new members of the ATP player council" and will serve two-year terms (PA, 6/26). ... Spain reportedly plans to install Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) President LUIS RUBIALES as its new president and former U21 Manager JULEN LOPETEGUI as its new coach after Euro 2016. According to Marca, Spanish Football Federation President ÁNGEL MARÍA VILLAR is being "increasingly viewed as UEFA’s permanent leader after bringing calmness back to the organisation in his interim stint since MICHEL PLATINI’s suspension last October." Consequently, the newspaper claims Villar has "identified Rubiales as his rightful heir, the former defender meeting the 66-year-old’s preference of an ex-player taking the reins" (FOOTBALL ESPANA, 6/26).

ITALIAN BLOW: Italy's World Cup-winning Manager MARCELO LIPPI "walked away from a key post" with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). Lippi, who led the Azzurri to its fourth World Cup triumph in '06, "was set to become Italy's new technical director, a post that would have seen him oversee an all-new federation program." The fallout from "a conflict of interest has ended Lippi's hopes of joining the FIGC" (AFP, 6/24).
