NRL Side Canterbury Coach Urging Re-Think Of Origin's Impact On Clubs

National Rugby League side Canterbury Bulldogs Manager Des Hasler has renewed his call for more "re-thinking" of how to find a solution to the "debilitating effect that State of Origin has on the premiership," according to Chris Barrett of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. TV ratings and crowds for NRL games "pay the price for the spotlight heaped on the code's mid-season commercial behemoth and showpiece event, and the Bulldogs coach is a leading voice on the issue." Hasler has "bemoaned the ravaging of the league's top players during the Origin window, going as far last year as labelling the NRL competition irrelevant and the situation of teams being stripped of their best players during a two-month period as embarrassing." On Triple M radio, Hasler said, "I'm a massive fan of Origin, so I don't want people to think I'm not a massive fan of Origin ... it's a great concept. But I think at some stage they've got to ... just to look [at it]. No other elite competition would allow their players to walk away from club games to participate." Under a new TV deal to come into effect in '18 "there will be at least some relief for clubs, with the second Origin match in that series and beyond to be played on a Sunday as part of a stand-alone representative weekend" (SMH, 6/26).
