Kuwait Files $1 Billion Lawsuit Against IOC Over Suspension

Kuwait filed a lawsuit in a Swiss court seeking $1B in damages from the IOC "over the suspension of its Olympic committee," according to the BBC. The IOC and FIFA suspended Kuwait in October "citing domestic laws that permit government interference in sports." But Kuwait said that "the IOC ban was imposed without proper investigation." Information Minister Sheikh Salman al-Humoud Al-Sabah said, "It's totally unacceptable that Kuwait is treated in this unfair way and barred from international sports activities without any appropriate probe being conducted. From the very beginning Kuwait did it its utmost to prevent the IOC suspension and showed a sincere desire to co-operate, but all to no avail." The minister complained that Kuwait had been left in "an embarrassing position" in sports circles where it was viewed as an "outlaw" (BBC, 6/23). REUTERS' Ahmed Hagagy wrote the IOC "had given Kuwait until Oct. 27 to change legislation it said challenged the independence of the country's Olympic committee and sports associations but Kuwait took no action." The ban means that "the country's Olympic Committee and consequently its athletes are not eligible for any funding from the IOC for the duration of the suspension" (REUTERS, 6/23).
