England & Wales Cricket Board To Open Media Rights Tender Two Years Early

The biggest TV deal "in the history of English cricket could be completed as early as next year" after the England & Wales Cricket Board indicated to broadcasters that its tender process could begin in the autumn, according to Nick Hoult of the London TELEGRAPH. ECB officials "informally told broadcasters last week that it intended to go to market before originally planned to seal a deal" to run from '20. The decision to go to tender more than two years before the current deal runs out "has surprised industry insiders." TV execs are "gearing themselves up for a winter of talks that will see a fierce contest between Sky and BT Sport." But before the ECB can go to market it "will have to provide details of the domestic Twenty20 competition and the make-up of the international calendar" (TELEGRAPH,6/22).
