Calgary Votes In Favor Of Exploring 2026 Olympic Bid

Twenty-eight years after "Olympic fever gripped the city," councilors agreed to spend up to C$5M ($4M) to "explore a bid to bring the Winter Games back to Calgary" in '26, according to Annalise Klingbeil of the CALGARY HERALD. On Monday, Calgary city council "accepted a recommendation from the Calgary Sport Tourism Authority to form a bid exploration committee that will examine the costs, benefits and feasibility of the bid for the 2026 Games." Council authorized the spending, from the fiscal sustainability reserve, "to conduct the study, following hours of discussion behind closed doors and a public presentation." Sport Tourism Authority Chair Doug Mitchell said that the group "has been working for two and a half years to drum up support to bring the Games back." He said, "It's been a marvellous secret, actually" (CALGARY HERALD, 6/21). GLOBAL NEWS' Bobrovitz, Tucker & Heidenreich reported an Olympic bid "may seem somewhat odd to some as Calgary has been hit hard by the steep decline in global oil prices." But Councilor Richard Pootmans "pointed out the city was in a significant recession when it bid for the 1988 Games in 1981." He said, "The city was looking for projects to inspire them, was looking for projects to help stimulate the economy." The Calgary Stampede board said that "it had been approached to gauge its interest in joining the possible bid," and added "it would support the bid as well as the building of a new arena on its property." The Canadian Sport Tourism Authority said that it will "raise private funds to help pay for the cost of the Calgary exploration committee’s work" (GLOBAL NEWS, 6/20).
