League Notes: World Rugby's Pichot To Report On Test Eligibility Rules

World Rugby Vice-Chair Agustin Pichot "is to look into the sport's international eligibility rules as part of a wide-ranging report into the sustainability of the game in the Pacific island nations." The former Argentina int'l "came out strongly against the existing rules, which allow a player to represent a country if they have lived there for three years, when he was nominated to his post last month." Pichot said that "he thought the period was too short." Pichot: "There are special cases where players moved when they were 10 or 12 years old. But just moving to a country, being taken from an Academy, like they are doing in Tonga, and put into play, say, in an Ireland shirt, I'm against it. I think it is not right" (REUTERS, 6/14).

ON THE CALENDAR: Finsterau, Germany, will host the 2017 Int'l Paralympic Committee Biathlon and Cross-Country Skiing World Championships, alongside the race calendar for '16-17. More than 135 skiers from 25 countries are expected for the competition between Feb. 10-19 for the last major event ahead of the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. The race calendar for '16-17 has also been confirmed. Vuokatti, Finland, will once again be the World Cup season opener between Dec. 9-16, followed by Western Center, Ukraine, from Jan 13-20.  The World Cups Finals will then roundoff the season in Sapporo, Japan from March 18-22 (IPC).

LEAGUE BRIEFS ...

On Wednesday, the Australian Football League will simultaneously "announce up to 10 new teams." The game-changing announcement will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. From '17, women "will play in a new AFL-sanctioned, AFL-supported national competition." The AFL, "at long last," joins football, cricket and Olympic sports "in not merely saying women athletes deserve this stage, but giving it to them." Just "a click into his second year" as the code's CEO, this is a "legacy moment" for Gillon McLachlan. It is something AFL Commission Chair Mike Fitzpatrick, on the tail end of his time steering the league, "can take with him." Both men can -- "and surely will on Wednesday -- thank the AFL's first female commissioner, Sam Mostyn" (THE AGE, 6/14).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India received 57 applications for the position of head cricket coach, "with speculation rife about the possible candidates including Australia's Stuart Law and Dav Whatmore." The board "kept the list of applicants tightly under wraps, but former team director Ravi Shastri, current chief selector Sandeep Patil and ex-fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad are among those to have publicly expressed interest." The BCCI's final decision is "expected to be made before India tour the West Indies in July" (DAWN, 4/16).

The board members of the European sports federations of athletics (European Athletics), swimming (LEN), cycling (UEC), gymnastics (UEG), rowing (FISA), triathlon (ETU) and golf (ET & LET) all committed in principle to participating in '22 after preliminary discussions on the host venue selection process for future editions of the championships (European Athletics).
