Unprecedented Security Plans In Place To Ensure Public Safety At Euro 2016 Fan Zones

It is an "unprecedented mobilization surrounding a space that crystallizes all of the attention and controversy" -- the 10 fan zones, one per Euro host city, will "benefit from around-the-clock security," according to Stéphane Sellami of LE PARISIEN. The security surrounding the fan zones, in which the matches will be shown on giant screens and alcohol will be sold, "is under the charge of 77,000 police officers and gendarmes mobilized throughout the competition." However, protection inside the zones "remains the responsibility of local authorities." For the tournament, 60 specialized companies, providing 13,000 private security agents, "were recruited to assure the public's safety." An Interior Ministry official said, "Pat downs of the public at entrances will be systematic, and travel bags will be prohibited. Moreover, guards will be equipped with metal detectors." Outside of physical means, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve "put his hand in his pocket raising the safety budget" €2M ($2.3M), in order to set up a video surveillance plan " to film the comings and goings of thousands of supporters." The global safety budget was €24M ($27.3M). A risk analysis committee, comprised of representatives from all branches of the national police and based within the General Directorate of the National Police (DGPN) will work 24-7 to provide a "state of threats." The team will provide a report on threats each day, match by match and team by team, so that "in case of a problem, fan zones could be closed under the instruction of the Interior" (LE PARISIEN, 6/6).

EXTRA TRAIN SERVICE: 20 MINUTES reported Autonomous Operator of Parisian Transports (RATP) CEO Elisabeth Borne announced "an extension of the subway schedule by an hour" during Euro 2016. Borne: "For each event, we have a transport plan to first of all reinforce the metros before the matches. Spectators will be transported in great conditions. We will also extend the metro service hours after the matches, on average one hour longer on week days to 2:15 in the morning." The plan will start Thursday. Borne also said that RATP will increase its workforce "in the order of 30-40 percent during this period. Concerning transportation union strikes during the tournament, Borne said that she was "very confident of maintaining normal traffic." Borne: "Workers understand the difficulties the French have endured in 2015 with the attacks, and more recently floods. Everyone wants the Euro to be a great party and I am very confident that in the coming weeks we will ensure normal traffic on our networks" (20 MINUTES, 6/6).
