José Mourinho Inks Three-Year Managerial Contract With ManU

José Mourinho has signed a contract to take over as ManU’s manager, "with the club expected to make a formal announcement on Friday," according to Romano & Christenson of the London GUARDIAN. The Portuguese and his agent, Jorge Mendes, have been in talks with ManU Exec Vice-Chair Ed Woodward throughout the week and the 53-year-old "finally put pen to paper on Thursday." The length of the contract is "believed to be three years and Mourinho travelled to Manchester on Thursday to take official photographs for the announcement." The former Real Madrid manager has "discussed transfer targets with the Old Trafford hierarchy," with André Gomes, John Stones, Álvaro Morata and Mauro Icardi high on his wish list. Mourinho will have a minimum of £150M ($220M) to spend on players, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic "a potential signing on a free transfer after the striker left Paris Saint-Germain." Asked whether he had spoken to Mourinho in the past week, Ibrahimovic said, "I have spoken to Mourinho every day since I left Inter. We talk a lot. He is the man to bring Manchester United back to the top. If you want action, you get Mourinho" (GUARDIAN, 5/26). In London, James Ducker wrote ManU and Mourinho’s representatives, as well as lawyers from both parties, "have been locked in talks in the past few days" to iron out the final details of his £12M ($18M) a year contract (TELEGRAPH, 6/26). The BBC's Simon Stone reported Mourinho's appointment has "been backed" by some former ManU players, including former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel and Hull City boss Steve Bruce. On Thursday, former defender Rio Ferdinand "praised the Portuguese former Chelsea boss." He said, "I have heard many say the 'Mourinho WAY' is not the Manchester United style of playing football. ... One thing I can tell Manchester United fans is that they have got themselves a true winner in all aspects. His CV shows success" (BBC, 5/26). In London, Mark Ogden reported Mourinho’s imminent arrival at ManU "has been welcomed by Bastian Schweinsteiger" -- the former Bayern Munich midfielder signed by Louis Van Gaal last summer. Schweinsteiger, currently on int'l duty with Germany, claims it will be "special" to play under Mourinho at Old Trafford. Schweinsteiger said, "Should Mourinho join Manchester United, I believe everyone would love to be coached by Mourinho. Then it will be something special" (INDEPENDENT, 5/26).
