Hamburg Freezers Fold Despite Business Willing To Sign 10-Year Shirt Deal

German Hockey League (DEL) side Hamburg Freezers "has folded despite reports of an unknown business willing to sign a 10-year deal as the club's shirt sponsors," according to Kathrin Hartmann of SPONSORs. The company reportedly offered to pay €550,000 ($615,000) annually over the next 10 seasons if AEG "would have decided to continue its ownership of the franchise." The team's most recent shirt sponsor, 5 vor Flug, paid an estimated €300,000 ($336,000) per year. The club received a total of €1.2M ($1.3M) "over a six-day rescue initiative." Almost half of the money, €530,000 ($593,000), came through crowdfunding. However, the money "was not enough to convince AEG to continue the team's operation" (SPONSORs, 5/26). AEG Europe President Tom Miserendino: "Since our (original) announcement last Wednesday there has been an unbelievable wave of support in Hamburg, especially from fans of the Freezers. Unfortunately we have not found a strategic partner to take over the Freezers and free AEG of the task of operating two teams in one league." AEG also owns DEL side Eisbären Berlin (SBD Global).
