Australian Men's, Women's Basketball Pursuing Landmark Deal Similar To Netball's

The Women's National Basketball League and Basketball Australia are "hopeful and confident" Adelaide Lightning and Melbourne Boomers "will be saved from extinction, as the sport chases a landmark broadcast deal similar to netball," according to Jon Tuxworth of THE AGE. Basketball Australia is reportedly "working to broker a blanket deal with a free-to-air network," which would include Boomers, Opals, NBL, WNBL and FIBA Oceania fixtures. This week Netball Australia "announced a landmark five-year agreement with Channel Nine and Telstra." Last year's WNBL competition was not televised after ABC "ended its long-running partnership," and a "strong presence" in South Australia and Victoria "would be crucial at the bargaining table." A private ownership consortium "is looking to bankroll the Boomers, which would comprise around half a dozen members" (THE AGE, 5/24).
