Scottish fifth-tier semi-professional football club Nairn County Dir Donald Matheson "has pledged to keep the club afloat as it faces an uncertain future," according to Jamie Durent of the INVERNESS COURIER.
The club’s main sponsor Narden Services Ltd., principal backers for 20 years, announced last week that it "would be ending" its association with Nairn on Tuesday. Brothers Peter and Michael Mackintosh, directors at Narden, "will resign their positions on the club board" and their father, club Chair Peter, "will also relinquish his role." It has meant a "frantic week" for Matheson Sr. and his fellow directors, with a committee meeting taking place on Monday night to "try and plot a way forward." Matheson "also hopes to co-ordinate with fans to organise a separate meeting." While describing last week’s bombshell as like "a hornets’ nest," Matheson insists he and the rest of the committee "will do all they can to keep Nairn going." He said, "I’m here to make sure the future of the club isn’t in any danger, as are the rest of the committee." Fundraising efforts "have already begun to help the Wee County in the short-term," with a GoFundMe page set up by supporter Matthew “Mashy” Young already topping £1,500 ($2,200) (INVERNESS COURIER, 5/24).
