Ireland's 2023 Rugby World Cup Bid Gets Boost After Argentina Withdraws

There was "more good news for Ireland's Rugby World Cup 2023 bidding team" on Monday, when Argentina President Mauricio Macri revealed the South American country "would be focusing on a 2027 bid," according to Patrick McCarry of SPORTS JOE. Argentina had "long been feared as a major contender for the Irish bid" but its union believes the time-scale for '23 is "unrealistic." The union will make its '27 bid official in October when tournament organizers "pay an early, exploratory visit." The withdrawal of Argentina "leaves the race for 2023 between three European countries and South Africa." Italy has made an official bid while France has "expressed a strong interest without publicising the matter." South Africa was the early favorite until SA Sport & Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula "withdrew the privileges of SA Rugby to bid for international tournaments." That decision may yet be reviewed, but "the main contenders would appear to be Ireland and Italy" (SPORTS JOE, 5/24).
