Names In The News

Russian Tennis Federation President SHAMIL TARPISHCHEV "backtracked on his earlier comments" on Thursday, and said that he "did not mean to suggest that MARIA SHARAPOVA's failed doping test could spell the end of her career." Russian news agency R-Sport quoted Tarpishchev as saying that Sharapova's situation is "bad" and that it is "very doubtful" that she will resume her career. Tarpishchev said, "I only said that she can't play now because no ruling on her case has been issued" (London GUARDIAN, 5/19). ... Opposed by the majority of Olympique de Marseille supporters, club President VINCENT LABRUNE will be “protected by armed police during the Coupe de France final” between OM and Paris St. Germain on Saturday. Heavily criticized by multiple OM supporters groups that “regularly call for his removal, Labrune will be under police protection during the entire match” which will take place at the Stade de France (RMC SPORT, 5/19). ... Philippine boxer MANNY PACQUIAO, WBO world welterweight champion, "scored a big political victory on Thursday when the elections commission declared he was among 12 new members of the upper house of Congress." Pacquiao: "I can focus and discipline myself, the way I did in boxing to help the nation." He also said that as a new senator, "he would push for free education at all levels" (REUTERS, 5/19). ... A Qatari sheikh will "fight his and the Gulf country’s first ever professional bout when he takes on Slovakia’s ELEMIR RAFAEL on the DAVID HAYE undercard in London on Saturday." Sheikh FAHAD BIN KHALID AL-THANI, a super lightweight, is "turning pro after some 40 fights as an amateur." He has also "represented Qatar’s national team" (AFP, 5/19).

BACKING OUT: World No. 3 ROGER FEDERER will miss a grand slam tournament for the first time since '99 after he was "forced to pull out of the French Open with a back injury." The Swiss’s "run of 65 consecutive grand slam appearances spanned 17 years but his withdrawal from this month’s tournament at Roland Garros means that RAFAEL NADAL moves up into the top four." Federer’s decision is not "overly surprising" as the 34-year-old has only played three events this year and "had to pull out of the Mutua Madrid Open at the beginning of this month" (LONDON TIMES, 5/19).

GOOD ENOUGH FOR GAMES: Australia's "highest-profile code-hopper ISRAEL FOLAU believes JARRYD HAYNE can carve out a successful rugby sevens career and has backed him to make Fiji's squad for the Rio Olympic Games." Like Folau, Hayne begins a "new chapter on a third football code when, as expected, he takes the field for Fiji in the London Sevens tournament." Folau said that "if there was anyone who could make the transition to sevens -- a far more aerobically focused code -- in such a short space of time, it was Hayne." Folau: "I hope he does make the Rio team and I certainly think he's got the skill set to make the squad" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 5/19),
