Olympic Notes: Kenya 'Well On The Way' To Complying With WADA Code

Kenya is "well on the way" to complying with the code of WADA, the government said on Wednesday "after discussions to fix an anti-doping law whose shortcomings threatened Kenya's participation at the Rio Olympics." A Kenyan delegation "including the foreign and sports ministers held talks with WADA in Canada on Tuesday." Kenya said that its delegation had "amicably" agreed on a road map to "ensure full compliance and this would involve presenting amendments agreed with WADA to parliament and, once passed, sending the act to WADA for review and approval" (REUTERS, 5/18).

Australian swim coach Scott Volkers is "expected to be barred from taking a role with the Brazilian swim team at the Rio Olympics." Volkers, who has "faced allegations of sexual abuse of three female swimmers when coaching in Australia" in the '80s, has been coaching in Brazil since '11. Eight swimmers from Volkers' club Minas Tennis Club "have made the Brazilian Olympic team." Volkers "would ordinarily be expected to follow them into the team as coach." But Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates last week "requested his Brazilian counterpart exclude Volkers from the Olympic team and it seems that request has been heeded" (ABC, 5/18).

The Korea FA said that the country will "play Nigeria first in an international football tournament created as a warm-up for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics." The KFA said that South Korea will host Nigeria on June 2 at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. The U23 men's team will then face Honduras on June 4. The country will "wrap up the tournament on June 6" with a match against Denmark at Bucheon Stadium (YONHAP, 5/18).
