Hamburg Freezers Owner AEG Won't File For License For Upcoming DEL Season

German Hockey League (DEL) club Hamburg Freezers "will not apply for a license for the upcoming '16-17 season," according to SPONSORs. Team Owner Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) announced that "at the moment" the club will not apply for a license. AEG has been trying to sell the team for several years. AEG Europe President & CEO Tom Miserendino: "Despite our strong involvement and a continued investment in Hamburg over the 14 years, we are still faced with a number of difficulties that are the result of owning two hockey teams in the same league. Therefore it has been our goal since 2011 to focus on one team. We have worked diligently since then to find a national or international partner to take over the Freezers -- unfortunately without any success to date." The club would have to file its application for a DEL license by Tuesday. But AEG is not expected to file any paperwork unless a suitable buyer has been found. Should the Freezers cease operation, the Barclaycard Arena, which is also owned by AEG, would lose its second major tenant. It would be another "huge blow for the venue," following the bankruptcy of Handball Bundesliga (HBL) side HSV Hamburg, the other major tenant. AEG also owns DEL club Eisbären Berlin (SPONSORs, 5/18).
