Board Of Control For Cricket In India President Shashank Manohar Resigns

Shashank Manohar "resigned as the president" of the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Tuesday, as the embattled organization comes under growing pressure from the country's top court "to introduce wide-ranging reforms," according to the AFP. Manohar wrote to BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur to announce his resignation "with immediate effect," in a move expected "to trigger his bid for re-election as chairman" of the Int'l Cricket Council. Manohar "had only been in his post since October last year," when he returned for a second stint as president of the BCCI in the wake of the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya. Manohar "had been widely regarded as a safe pair of hands who could bring some much needed stability to a board whose reputation has been tarnished by several scandals." After becoming BCCI president, Manohar "swiftly moved to topple another of his predecessors, Narayanaswami Srinivasan, from the ICC chairmanship and reverse some of the recent rule changes that had been designed to give greater power to India, England and Australia." Indian newspapers "have been reporting for several days that Manohar would resign his post at the BCCI in order to stand for re-election as ICC head" (AFP, 5/10). REUTERS' Amlan Chakraborty reported under reforms Manohar himself "initiated within the ICC, the next chairman, to be elected later this month, must be an independent candidate with no formal links to any other country." Thakur confirmed Manohar "has filed his application for the ICC's top post and said the BCCI would soon elect its next president" (REUTERS, 5/10). THE HINDU's Amol Karhadkar wrote Manohar’s resignation "leaves the BCCI a headless body for the second time in less than a year." According to its controversial rulebook, which has been under the scanner of the apex court, Thakur "will now have to call a Special General Body Meeting within two weeks to elect a new president." The new president, who will have to be nominated by at least one of the six full members from the east zone, "will be in charge till the 2017 AGM" (THE HINDU, 5/10). The PTI reported Manohar's exit, which was being intensely speculated, "has not gone down too well with a sizable section of the BCCI top brass, which strongly feels that he has left them in the lurch." According to BCCI sources, Manohar "was waiting for the Supreme Court's final verdict but since it will only come out after the apex court opens post summer vacation, the Vidarbha lawyer possibly did not want to wait." According to reliable sources, Thakur "is being tipped to take over the hot seat." Indian Premier League Chair Rajeev Shukla "is also in the running along with Maharashtra CA president and business magnet Ajay Shirke" (PTI, 5/10).
