The Victoria Racing Club, the home of the Melbourne Cup, has lured former Australian journalist and int'l racing Manager MARTIN TALTY "to the position of director of racing." It is understood that Talty, who has spent the last 20 years in Dubai "promoting and building the now world famous annual World Cup Series, will take up his position shortly." Talty will replace current Racing Manager JAMES ROSS who "is believed to be moving to Sydney" (THE AGE, 5/8). ... Pakistan appointed South African MICKEY ARTHUR as head coach of its national cricket team, "replacing WAQAR YOUNIS who resigned after a disastrous World Twenty20 last month." The Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement that Arthur "has confirmed his acceptance of the post of Head Coach of the Pakistan National Cricket team." Arthur, who turns 48 later this month, "successfully coached his native South Africa" from '05-10 before migrating to Australia, "where he remained coach for 19 months." Arthur’s "first task will be to prepare his team for their upcoming tour of England, where Pakistan plays four Tests, a Twenty20 and five One Day Internationals" (AFP, 5/6). ... League Championship side Charlton Athletic Manager JOSE RIGA informed his players "of his decision to resign immediately" after the club's match against Burnley and admitted at the post-match press conference that he had made up his mind "a few days ago."
