Optus Reveals Premier League Subscription Prices Starting At $11 Per Month

Optus has "unveiled pricing for its English Premier League coverage" with subscriptions starting at A$15 ($11.18) per month and free for those on plans costing A$85 ($63) or more, according to Max Mason of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. The EPL will only be available to Optus customers, but the telecom "revealed that streaming the world's most popular football league will not be counted" toward customers' mobile or data plans. Optus said that "new and existing customers on postpaid mobile, mobile broadband and home broadband bundles can watch the EPL" from as little as A$15 per month. Optus also announced a "mini set-top box, or puck, much like Apple TV, by its pay-TV partner Fetch that customers can use to watch the EPL, as well as Fetch's entertainment package on a larger screen" (SMH, 5/4). ABC reported the exclusive deal has "prompted an online backlash from football fans in Australia." Enthusiasm for the Premier League in Australia "could have hit new heights following Leicester City's incredible title win, defying the odds and football logic to snatch English football's biggest prize from the traditional big clubs." But online reactions have been "anything but favourable towards Optus, with the requirement of switching to a new internet or mobile provider a particular obstacle" (ABC, 5/3).
