League Notes: F1 Race Dir Charlie Whiting Calls For Safety Measures

F1 Race Dir Charlie Whiting "has insisted that the sport must adopt cockpit safety measures despite opposition from drivers." He said that he believes "it would be remiss of the FIA not to act when it has identified a fundamental threat to drivers’ safety." Whiting: "That we are aware that accidents like this can take drivers’ lives and we are aware of a solution -- then I think it is incumbent on us to do our best to make sure we can protect drivers more. I do not think there is any doubt about that" (London GUARDIAN, 5/4).

QUICK GETAWAYVolvo "has shocked V8 Supercars by announcing plans to leave the sport at the end of the year." The Swedish company "took the motorsport community by surprise two days before this weekend's Perth Supersprint races in Western Australia." The decision was taken by Polestar, the high-performance arm of Volvo Cars. Polestar COO Niels Möller said that his business "no longer aligns with the sport." Möller: "Our strategy and business objectives requires us now to focus our attention to other technologies and championships in the near future" (DRIVE, 5/4).

LEAGUE BRIEFS ...
South Africa's Doping Control Laboratory
"has become the fourth lab to be sanctioned" by WADA in the past month. Bloemfontein "joins Beijing and Lisbon in being suspended" from carrying out any WADA-related anti-doping activities, while Moscow's lab "had its accreditation revoked in April." The decision leaves 31 WADA-accredited labs in the world, "but none in Africa" (BBC, 5/4).

The NFL Players Association "has warned players against steroid-contaminated meat from China and Mexico, saying eating large quantities could lead to them failing drugs tests." The NFLPA said in a statement sent to members that players "remained ultimately responsible for what they put in their bodies." The statement said, "Players are warned to be aware of this issue when traveling to Mexico and China. Please take caution if you decide to consume meat, and understand that you do so at your own risk" (AFP, 5/4).
