Euroleague President Jordi Bertomeu Critical Of FIBA Following Tuesday's Meeting

Euroleague President Jordi Bertomeu addressed the league's conflict with FIBA, saying, "We are more concerned with building," according to José Luis Martínez of MARCA. Bertomeu: "FIBA is using a more and more aggressive attitude. Every week there is a warning, and later threats, sanctions and even disqualifications. It is reprehensible that they put the national federations and national teams in the middle of this. ... I am surprised and disappointed by the silence of the national federations and I also find the silence of the political authorities strange. I was expecting a stronger reaction" (MARCA, 5/4). The EP reported Bertomeu said, "The conflict surely will end up in the courts very soon. Avoiding this was the first thing that I asked for in the meeting on Tuesday and it was not possible. And it would be a disaster if we do not win" (EP, 5/4).

CONTRACT UNDER SUSPICION: The EFE reported FIBA contracted Aizoon, paying it €106,000 ($122,000) for a 3-on-3 basketball development project for the Olympics "because it was Iñaki Urdangarin's business, although it did not carry out the project, which was developed by consultants." FIBA hired a consultant "which looked for other professionals to take over the various aspects of the project" (EFE, 5/4).
