English Premier League Side Sunderland In The Red With £25.4M Pre-Tax Loss

EPL side Sunderland, which is "battling hard to escape relegation" under Sam Allardyce, has rounded off the annual financial results season in the English top tier by reporting a £25.4M pre-tax loss for the year to July 31, 2015, according to David Owen of INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL. The loss, which compares with a loss of £17.1M a year earlier, "was incurred on turnover" which edged down from £104.4M to £101.1M, "with both gate receipts and television and media income declining." The club -- which says it committed gross transfer fees of up to £43.2M in the summer transfer window on the likes of Fabio Borini from Liverpool -- did manage a £3.9M "profit on player sales in the period under review." But this was "dwarfed by the operating loss," including amortization, of £23.3M. Staff costs "climbed to" £77.1M from £69.5M. Interest costs also rose to more than £6M, from £2.3M, "following major changes to the company’s borrowing arrangements" (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 5/3).
