Mediaset Spain Announces It Will Not Acquire Rights To Euro 2016

Mediaset Spain decided not to acquire the broadcast rights for Euro 2016 following a meeting with CAA Eleven, the agency negotiating the rights, according to LIBERTAD DIGITAL. The broadcaster said that it believes that acquiring the rights "could seriously damage the profitability of the company, affecting its net profit." Sources at Mediaset Spain confirmed the decision, saying that "if the company had bought these rights, its accounts could have suffered a negative impact" of up to €15M ($17M). With Mediaset pulling out, Atresmedia and Spanish public broadcaster RTVE "are alone in the fight to acquire the rights to the tournament, which will be held from June 10-July 10" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 4/27).
