All England Club Releases Images Of $100M New-Look No. 1 Court

Images have been released which show how Wimbledon's No. 1 Court "will look with its new roof," according to Stuart Fraser of the London DAILY MAIL. As part of the Wimbledon "Master Plan" to further improve the All England Club's facilities, "the second show court will have a new fixed and retractable roof" by '19. The roof will be built at a cost of around £70M ($102M) by British construction company Sir Robert McAlpine, "whose previous projects include Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and London's Olympic Stadium." Fans will "also notice a difference outside in the grounds with a new two-level public plaza replacing Court 19." No difference in the look of No. 1 Court "will yet be noticed at this year's Championships, with construction due to begin following the completion of the tournament in July." The existing fixed roof over the seating will be removed, "meaning there will be no roof at all over the court during the 2017 Championships." The 2019 Championships "will be the first to experience play under the roof on two courts." Two additional tiers with around 900 seats will be installed, boosting the capacity from around 11,500 to 12,400 (DAILY MAIL, 4/26).
