MotoGP's Spanish Grand Prix In Jerez Draws Just 63,350 For Sunday's Race

It was announced that only 63,350 fans attended MotoGP's Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez on Sunday, according to Mela Chércoles of AS. The "circuit had appeared as full as usual, but last year's race drew 122,551, nearly double" this year's attendance. Reviewing "recent years, with '13 as the lowest crowd for a race with 111,259," shows that this year's was the worst-attended race in history. This year's three-day total included 11,155 on Friday and 45,750 on Saturday (AS, 4/25). In Barcelona, Elvira González reported the race is accustomed to "much bigger numbers," like the 132,168 who attended Sunday's race in '07, or the three-day total of 263,648 recorded in '09. A year ago, the three-day total was 243,570: with 44,247 on Friday, 76,772 on Saturday and 122,551 on Sunday. Jerez Mayor Mamen Sánchez had said that "this year we are going to give real numbers," referencing what was a "secret to few:" the numbers had been inflated in previous years. She added that "practically the same amount of people came this year," but the figures are based on ticket sales (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 4/25).
