The Nürburgring "still hopes" to be on the Formula 1 calendar next year as the host of the German Grand Prix despite "ongoing uncertainty about the future of the event," according to ESPN. The German Grand Prix was canceled last year after a "contractual dispute" between the Nürburgring and Formula One Management. The race is back on the '16 calendar, with Hockenheim set to host the event on July 31, but the "uncertainty" around the Nürburgring's ability to host the event "means it remains a doubt beyond this season." However circuit chiefs have "confirmed talks" with F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone are ongoing. A circuit spokesperson said, "I would like to answer that the Nürburgring is still in discussion for the 2017 Formula One Grand Prix in Germany. We are still confident to host this grand prix" (ESPN, 4/23).
MONZA MAYOR CONFIDENT: PLANET F1 reported Monza, Italy Mayor Roberto Scanagatti is "sure" Formula 1 will remain at the Italian circuit beyond this year's grand prix. Monza's negotiations with Ecclestone "continue to rumble on." For "every positive comment that hints at a new deal, there is one from Ecclestone speaking about how F1 does not need Monza" and its other old, traditional circuits. Scanagatti, though, "is confident that when all is said and done, Monza will take its place on the F1 calendar." He said, "I do not see an F1 without Monza, I think the end result will be obtained" (PLANET F1, 4/22).
HUNGARORING EXTENDS DEAL: THE CHECKERED FLAG reported the Hungarian Grand Prix will remain on the F1 calendar until at least '26, after organizers signed an extension to its contract with FOM. Owners of the Hungaroring circuit "are planning a revamp of their facilities next year following agreement from the Hungarian Government," that substantial funds would be made available for the re-development. The track "has also received a complete resurface this year ahead of the upgrade" (THE CHECKERED FLAG, 4/22).
