The European Athletics Indoor Championships "will come to Glasgow in 2019 following a successful bid from the city."
More than 600 athletes from 50 countries "are expected to compete in the three-day event, making it one of the biggest to be hosted by Glasgow."
The event "will be held at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena" (Scotland DAILY RECORD, 4/23).
Isle of Man Legislative Council Member David Cretney said that the appointment of an event promoter could spell a "new era" for the Isle of Man's 108-year-old TT races.
Tynwald "approved the appointment of London-based Vision Nine on a 10-year contract this week." Cretney said it "signals a new era" for the event from '17, as the firm "is promising to boost the economy and grow spectator numbers" (BBC, 4/21).
The European Athletics Team Championships (ETCH) will be staged biennially from '17 after the council moved to balance the competition calendar and boost the profile and understanding of the event.
The decision means the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships (ECH) -- which will be part of the multi-sport European Championships -- will stand alone as the main European Athletics event that summer. The council also approved a revamped timetable for the event, with considerably shorter sessions on the main competition days to make it more attractive for TV audiences (European Athletics).
