League Notes: UCI Insisting It Uses Best Method Available To Detect Hidden Motors

The Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) insisted it has been using the "best method available to detect motors hidden in bikes after a media report suggested mechanical doping was evident at World Tour level." TV station France 2, in collaboration with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, claimed that "hidden motors were used in the Strade Bianche one-day race and the Coppi e Bartali race in Italy this season." The report "used thermal imaging to argue that five motors were hidden in the seat tube and two in the rear hub," but added they "could not prove it beyond all reasonable doubt" (REUTERS, 4/18).

England has "attempted a minor shake-up of the largely conventional world of test cricket by offering to use a points-based system to determine the winner" of its home series against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Mohan de Silva confirmed "receiving the proposals covering the three tests," five one-dayers and a Twenty20 Int'l set to be played between the teams from May 19 to July 5. De Silva said, "We'll discuss it in our next board meeting and announce our decision in a week or two" (REUTERS, 4/18).
