National Rugby League side Manly Sea Eagles sought an "urgent and immediate meeting" with New South Wales Premier Mike Baird about stadia funding in "what could be a final push to save famous Brookvale Oval," according to Dean Ritchie of the Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH. Manly has "reluctantly started private discussions about the gut-wrenching possibility of moving from Brookvale Oval to another venue in Sydney’s north if funding cannot be secured." Manly "desperately" wants to remain at Brookvale but lack of stadia funding from the State Government and Warringah Council may "force a dramatic relocation from the club’s spiritual home." Club CEO Joe Kelly stressed his club would always remain "on Sydney’s north side" and wanted to stay at Brookvale -- but there "could be no long-term guarantees." The Sea Eagles could look at redeveloping Manly Oval or Warringah Rugby Park or "construct a new stadium on Sydney’s north shore near the train line." The club would want a stadium in its region "similar to Central Coast Stadium, as a minimum, rather than moving to Allianz Stadium." Sea Eagles Chair Scott Penn said, "We need the best possible facility on the northern beaches/north shore. We want to stay at Brookie but if we’re not able to secure the funding for an upgrade, then we need a next-best alternative that suits the Government strategy" (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 4/13).
