COACHES/MANAGERS
: Venezuela named former goalkeeper RAFAEL DUDAMEL "as coach after a string of defeats in the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign amid severe financial problems." The "appointment of the low-profile 43-year-old Dudamel, who played 54 times for Venezuela, rather than a world-renowned coach reflects the governing body's lack of cash." GAO HONGBO dropped his title of "interim" on Friday and became the head coach of China's football team, three days after guiding the team "to an unexpected spot in the final round of Asia's 2018 World Cup qualifiers." Gao, who coached the Chinese national team between '09 and '11, "was named as the coach of China on an interim basis in February to guide the team for the last two rounds of Asian Zone preliminary qualifiers" (XINHUA, 4/2). ... CHRISTIAN GOURCUFF "stood down as coach of Algeria on Sunday with more than two years to go before the end of his contract." The Algerian Football Federation announced his departure, saying that it "ended his contract amicably at his request" (BBC, 4/3).
