League Notes: MPs Threaten Sports Direct Boss Ashley With Contempt Of Parliament

Sports Direct Founder Mike Ashley has been "formally ordered to appear before MPs to give evidence about Sports Direct’s treatment of its workers after he refused to do so last week." The Business, Innovation & Skills committee has said that it could take action against Ashley "if he refused to appear at a hearing on June 7." The committee said, "Should Mr. Ashley not agree to appear on June 7, the committee reserves the right to take the matter further, including seeking the support of the House of Commons in respect of any complaint of contempt." It is understood that "no one has been charged with contempt of Parliament for more than 50 years" (London TELEGRAPH, 3/15).

Drinks tycoon and Formula 1 team Force India co-Owner Vijay Mallya "faces a sensitive diary clash this week as the season-opening Australian Formula One Grand Prix coincides with an appointment" to appear before Indian investigators. A senior official from the Enforcement Directorate said last week that Mallya "had been summoned for questioning this Friday as part of an investigation related to one of the bank loans." Friday is "also the first official practice day before Sunday's Australian Grand Prix." Mallya, who regularly attends races, "did not respond to a request for comment on whether he plans to go" (REUTERS, 3/15).

Football Federation Australia "made a major step" toward unifying the "often fragmented pathways of elite youth development" by establishing the High Performance Football School Pilot Program at Westfield Sports High. Some of the "best young footballers" in New South Wales will be given access to up to 14 hours of elite coaching experience administered by FFA in what "is a test for what could become a national program." Over the next two years, Westfield Sports High will run the program in conjunction with FFA and if successful, "it will be rolled out to a number of schools across Australia" in '18 (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 3/15).
