Event Notes: IAAF Announces Tampere, Finland As Host Of 2018 U20 Worlds

IAAF decided at the 203rd council meeting that the Finnish city Tampere, the sole bidder, "will host" the 2018 U20 World Championships. The IAAF council "fully endorsed its bid, which will bring the age-group IAAF event to the third biggest Finnish city, with the country's capital Helsinki having twice staged the athletics worlds." Also during the meeting, IAAF awarded the 2018 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships to Valencia, Spain (XINHUA, 3/11).

The WTA Tour is returning to Switzerland "after an eight-year gap with a clay-court tournament in July." Organizers of the Ladies Championship in Gstaad said that "the tour has confirmed their event will replace the previously scheduled tournament in Bad Gastein, Austria, on the calendar." The Gstaad tournament will be played July 11-18, immediately after Wimbledon (AP, 3/11).
