Olympic Notes: Top Golfers Snub Invite To Olympic Test Event In Rio De Janeiro

PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem "had a free charter lined up for the best players in the world to jet down to Brazil, play 18, and head back home." The occasion "was a test event for the new Olympic sport on a golf course built specifically for the games in August." The problem was, "no one wanted to go." Not on a charter, "or even a fast boat." Instead, a few local players "will try out the course on March 8 to make sure it is ready for golf's return to the Olympics for the first time in 112 years." No "real explanation was given why no one raised their hand to play, other than scheduling difficulties." Int'l Golf Federation VP Ty Votaw said, "We talked to a number of top players. They expressed interest but at the end of the day the tight worldwide schedule made it tough to justify a one-day trip down there and back" (AP, 3/3).

The IOC said that Olympic officials have identified 43 candidates for a team of refugee athletes who will compete in the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro in a "message of hope" for millions of refugees around the world. IOC President Thomas Bach said that he expects between five and 10 athletes to be selected for a team that will compete under the Olympic flag as "Team Refugee Olympic Athletes." The final list of athletes will be named by the IOC exec board in June (AP, 3/2).

GE Healthcare announced the IOC selected the company’s Centricity Practice Solution as the official electronic medical record to be used by the medical teams of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. This marks the first time that all athletes and spectators at the Olympic Games will have their health interactions managed by an electronic medical record. Centricity Practice Solution will be used for managing data related to injuries and illness for athletes competing in the games as well as spectators, officials, athlete family members and coaches who require medical assistance throughout the Games (GE Healthcare).
