League Notes: FIBA Wants To Include Clubs From North Africa, Middle East In Europe Cup

FIBA continues revealing details of its future project for European competitions. On Wednesday, FIBA announced that it wants the Europe Cup, which will replace the Eurocup, to include clubs from North Africa and the Middle East. FIBA and a representative from the national leagues met on Tuesday in Paris to continue "polishing the details of the new Champions League, which will replace the Euroleague, and the Europe Cup" (AS, 2/24). ... New figures "emerged showing how the threat of match-fixing in tennis is divided up -- and how the large majority of matches under suspicion have taken place in the lower reaches of the professional tours." For the first time "it can be clearly illustrated that the threat of corruption exists mainly in the remoter outposts of the men's game, at Futures events where prize money is at its lowest." According to authoritative sources at the top of the sport, nearly 50% of alerts last year "occurred on the humble men's Futures tier," where total purses are as low as $10,000 for each tournament. By contrast "just one Grand Slam match in 2015 came under suspicion" (London DAILY MAIL, 2/23). ... Russian team Katusha exited the Movement for Credible Cycling following Orica-GreenEdge's decision to leave the organization on Tuesday. Unlike Orica, Katusha has had its anti-doping issues in recent months, "escaping a ban" from the Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) after two failed drugs tests in the past six months, but under MPCC rules the team "would need to serve a suspension" (CYCLING WEEKLY, 2/24).

NOT ON THE AGENDA: Volkswagen Group motorsport boss Wolfgang Durheimer said that Volkswagen "will not enter Formula 1 until the ownership of the sport and the technical regulations are settled." VW "has repeatedly been linked with taking one of its brands into Formula 1, but it currently focuses on the World Endurance Championship, World Rally Championship and GT racing." Durheimer: "Formula 1 is not on our agenda right now. The situation is not predictable enough to make the kind of investment required" (AUTOSPORT, 2/24).
